About the event

This virtual talanoa discusses key results of the Sharm El Sheik Climate Summit (COP27), and how they intersect with global early childhood development policy. Speakers will share their reflection on COP27and opportunities to elevate the ECD as a fundamental building block of climate resilience as well as a pathway to adaptation and mitigation.

The webinar will highlight the pioneering leadership of the Republic of Marshall Islands (RMI) government and the support of the Pacific Regional Council for ECD, UNICEF and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) in interweaving ECD and climate change policy. The dialogue will explore the potential for ECD centered climate policies and programs to create new opportunities for international financing of the human development, climate resilience and sustainable development of vulnerable nations.

Objectives

The objectives of this webinar are as follows:

  • To provide a general overview about COP27 and what was achieved.
  • To provide an overview of ECD related actions/actors at COP27, with emphasis on the Pacific/RMI leadership in facilitating scoping for future points of entry for ECD into the UNFCCC negotiation.
  • To present a conceptual framework about why ECD is fundamentally connected to Climate Change resilience, adaptation and mitigation (and how it is a key to addressing Loss & Damage)
  • To present possible steps forward in the process of elevating ECD in the UNFCCC language and advocating for ECD programs to be supported by climate financing facilities and mechanisms.
